A Land for All’s Story
On October 10, 2023, just three days after the outbreak of the most devastating violence in the region in decades, the board of A Land for All—seven Israeli and seven Palestinian members—met for the first time as a formal body. This was more than a meeting; it marked a turning point. After years as a decentralized network of activists, the binational movement had just transitioned into a more structured organization -committed to making its vision more impactful and resilient.
The timing could not have been more difficult. The Hamas-led attack on southern Israel had shattered lives and cast deep doubt on the future of any shared political project. Amid shock, grief and uncertainty—even about the continued existence of its own movement—the newly formed board came together. Not in denial of reality, but in defiance of despair.
Even in the shadow of catastrophe, the board affirmed that despair could not be the final word. A Land for All would carry on—with more clarity, more urgency, and a deeper commitment than ever. Under the joint leadership of May Pundak and Rula Hardal—one Israeli, one Palestinian—A Land for All puts forward a bold vision: two sovereign states, living side by side in one shared homeland.
This new political paradigm is centred on the idea that each national group needs and has a right to self-determination as an independent state with a separate representative government. At the same time, the confederation model recognizes the right of all the land’s people to visit, study, work and live as permanent residents across the shared homeland. These rights would go hand in hand with shared responsibility—on public health, climate change policies, and land and water use.
A Land for All’s political approach dares to imagine a political future built on interdependence—not as a compromise, but as a moral commitment. A Land for All is grounded in the belief that all people deserve the fundamental freedom to live in safety, dignity, and self-determination.
The organization is rooted in five core values:
- Diversity: A Land for All is made up of people from both communities and a range of political, religious and cultural identities and perspectives.
- Respect for differences: The group’s work is based on the acknowledgement of each other’s experiences and grievances.
- Shared goals: A Land for All is dedicated to ending conflict, achieving reconciliation, and building a shared future of peace, respect and mutual recognition.
- Collaboration: The group’s work begins with the desire of both Israelis and Palestinians for a political solution that reflects their collective needs. Together, they have developed a vision that moves beyond segregation toward a future rooted in shared interests, mutual recognition, and deepening integration.
- Inclusivity: A Land for All ensures that all voices are heard so the needs and aspirations of people throughout the region are recognized and reflected.
A Land for All’s commitment to pluralism has inspired the group to strengthen its internal organization and governance processes, to forge greater and broader connections in support of its confederation model, and to carry out policy research and development that translates the model into a functional reality. Above all, from that first board meeting, pluralism has fuelled the group’s belief that hope is a powerful action and that a land for all Israelis and Palestinians is a hope whose time has come.
